The National Electrical and Communications Association (NECA) has joined leading building and construction industry peak bodies to call for the re-establishment of the Australian Building and Construction Commission (ABCC).

Legislation to re-establish the commission is currently sitting with the Senate, following its passage through the House of Representatives. “NECA calls upon Independent, Green and Labor Senators to pass this important piece of legislation. The re-establishment of the ABCC is critical to future employment and growth opportunities within our industry, particularly given the fragile economic environment,” said CEO Suresh Manickam.

“We have long expressed our concerns about the undue influence and behaviour of certain trade unions. Transparency and lawfulness should be a given in the building and construction industry.

“Our community pays a price for increased construction costs associated with unlawful behaviour. As a result, Senators voting for the re-establishment of this committee will be supporting the ongoing building of key community and economic infrastructure such as roads, rail lines and hospitals. I hope the Senate will make the right decision and support the reintroduction of the ABCC. Australia’s electrical contractors are counting on it,” added Manickam.
